Instructions for calling Phone Numbers in Vienna

Austria international dialing code: +43
Vienna area code: 01

To call a local number within your own area, dial the number only. You don’t have to dial the area code.

To call to another area, dial the respective area code first. When calling within Austria, you have to dial "0" followed by the area code (i.e. 01 for Vienna). Area codes and phone numbers in Austria are variable length: for some big cities you have just a 2-digit code (Vienna = 01), for most of the rest, it is a 4-digit prefix code.

To call from abroad to a number in Austria, dial your international access number (usually 00), followed by the country code of Austria and then the area code without the 0 (i.e. 0043-1 for Vienna)

If you are not sure how to dial a number, just add the country and area prefix, this will work in any case.

To make a call from a mobile phone to a fixed line number, you always have to add the area prefix code.

To call from a mobile to another mobile phone, you must add the prefix code of the mobile service provider of the person you are calling (0664 for A1, 0699 for ONE, 0676 for T-mobile (now Magenta), 0650 for Tele-ring and 0660 for Drei). This is less complicated because people will always give their mobile number with the code.

Pharmacies

Pharmacies on duty (off-hour openings)

In Austria, pharmacies are obligated by law to participate in so-called “nightshifts”, they are then referred to as “Notfallapotheke” or Nachtapotheke”.

There is a complex system in place which distributes these shifts amongst the pharmacies, ensuring that there is always an open pharmacy nearby 24/7. This entails that the pharmacy on duty on one day very likely isn’t the same one on duty a couple of days afterwards, meaning it is necessary to always check which pharmacy is open before heading out.

All pharmacies usually provide the information about the nearest “Nachtapotheke” by putting a poster on their closed doors, or you could use the search engine on www.apothekenindex.at. If you use a pharmacy out of normal office hours, you will be charged a one-off fee per visit (not per bought item), which is 3,80 € for nighttime visits (between 8:00 – 20:00) and 1,30€ for daytime visits on weekends and public holidays (between 8.00 – 20.00).

The Wiener Linien annual pass is valid for exactly 365 days starting on the first day of the next full calendar month and can be used for travel on all public transport lines within Vienna’s Zone 100.

A reduced-fare annual pass is available for seniors. A direct debit authorization (SEPA direct debit) placed with your bank lets you conveniently pay for your annual pass in advance, either monthly or annually. Alternatively, a one-time payment in full can be made in any Wiener Linien ticket office or in our online ticket shop. Online banking and credit card are acceptable forms of payment in the online shop. Annual passes are not transferable.

Weekly and Monthly Passes
Weekly and monthly passes are valid for one calendar week or one calendar month, respectively. A weekly pass can be used for unlimited travel on Vienna’s public transport network during the selected week, from 12:00 am (midnight) Monday until 9:00 am the following Monday. A monthly pass is valid from the first day of the chosen calendar month until the second day of the following month.

Weekly and monthly passes can be purchased in one of our ticket offices or online. If lost, a ticket purchased in the online shop can be replaced by simply printing it out again. Weekly and monthly passes that are not "personalized" (issued to a specific person) are transferable. However, a personalized ticket bought in the online shop or stored on your mobile phone may not be transferred to another person.

Short-Term Passes
A short-term pass is good for unlimited travel by tram, bus and rail inside Vienna’s core zone for as long as the ticket is valid. Prior to use, you must validate your pass by punching it in a ticket validating machine (conveniently located in underground stations and on buses and trams).

Available options: 24, 48, and 72 Hour Pass; 8-Day Ticket; Vienna Card.

A short-term pass is transferable but may only be used by one passenger at a time.

Single Tickets
Single tickets (Einzelfahrscheine) can be used to travel once in one direction and are valid from the time they are punched in a validating machine. You may change between tram, bus and underground as often as you like, but without interrupting travel.

Reduced-fare single tickets, including those in the form of strip tickets, are available for certain passenger categories.

Purchasing a ticket

Online Ticket Shop / Ticket App

Whether you are at home or on the go, the Wiener Linien online ticket shop and mobile ticket app offer a quick and easy means of buying tickets. You can print out the ticket yourself, have it sent to you by mail (postage costs extra) or display it on your mobile phone. Buy tickets with your smartphone: You can buy Wiener Linien tickets easily and conveniently when you are out and about. All you need is a smartphone and the WienMobil app or the Wiener Linien ticket app. Mobile tickets are not transferable. Tickets that are bought on a smartphone are displayed on the mobile phone and cannot be printed out. They are customized for the person buying them or for a companion, and are therefore not transferable.

Buy for other people: If you buy a ticket for another person via the Wiener Linien ticket app or in the online ticket shop, please note that this person must be in possession of the mobile phone of the person who bought the ticket in case of a ticket inspection.
